The Marlin Spikes ........
Decorative knots, Hemp Knots, Macrame, Nautical knotwork, Marlinspike Seamanship, Civil War Naval Period History or even Sea Shanties; The Marlin Spikes provided it all. The Marlin Spikes originated from the Sunken Ship Buoys a nautical singing group of the USS Fort Henry Civil War Naval Living History Unit in July of 2010. The members are composed of the Alvarez and Rioseco Families. These two families would get together on holidays, play music, and discuss history and politics. On Christmas of 2009, we sung and crudely recorded “Cindy” using one old mic and a beat up computer. After many takes in a teenager’s room, we ended up with a less than stellar recording.
Since then, at Dry River Studios LLC, we re-recorded “Cindy” as well as some other songs. We’ve had so much fun that in July 2010, we decided to combine our love of history and music by creating our first CD titled Ladies of Spain. In Jan 2011, our debut CD was completed and the shanty group The Marlin Spikes was born.
The vocals are provided by Barbara and Ariana Rioseco, Humberto, Betty, and Adriana Alvarez. The instrumentals and music are provided by Humberto Alvarez (Mandolin, Guitar, Banjo, Fiddle, Bodhran, Tin Whistle), Kevin Alvarez (Bass, Guitar), Luis Rioseco (Percussion and Keyboard). Sound engineering and recording by Luis Rioseco at
Dry River Studios, LLC in Weston, Fl.
This website is also a collection of Marlinspike Seamanship (Nautical Knotwork) projects created by
Humberto R. Alvarez, International Guild Of Knot Tyers and a retired US Navy Chief Petty Officer
The Marlin Spikes and Dry River Studios, LLC together are committed to providing quality music, artwork, and education to our community.
